Tips for Conserving Water during Severe Drought in California

Tips for Conserving Water during Severe Drought in California

At this time, California is currently experiencing one of the most severe droughts that it is ever seen. Because of this, residents of the Golden State need to begin conserving water immediately. This is a real problem and it needs to be treated as such.

With that in mind, we’d like to help provide California residents with some tips to help conserve water during this difficult time. Please use these indoor and outdoor tips to help save this precious commodity.

Indoor Water Conservation Tips

We all need water for each and every day use. It is an essential resource that we all require. But remember that it is also a limited resource, so conservation is important and we need to rethink the way that we use it daily.

In the laundry room, instead of running the washing machine whenever you want, choose to wait until you have a full load. Next, you can try a new washing machine altogether that is more water efficient. Finally, if you wash dark clothes in cold water, this will help to save energy and water. And on a side note, using cold water for dark clothes will help them to retain their color as well.

In the kitchen, to save water you should only run the dishwasher when it is full. You can install a water and energy-efficient dishwasher to cut down on your water use. Reduce the flow of the kitchen faucet by installing aerators, and do not let the water run when washing dishes by hand. You can fill a basin instead and use that water to rinse your dishes during the washing experience.

In the bathroom, to cut down on water use in the shower you can install low flow shower heads. This typically saves 2.5 gallons of water per shower use. When taking a bath, do not fill the tub all the way up. Only fill it halfway or less. This will save around 12 gallons of water. Finally, you could also install a high-efficiency toilet. This toilet will save around 19 gallons per person each day and is very efficient.

Outdoor Water Conservation Tips

For the most part, Californians are under the impression that they use more water indoors as opposed to outdoors. Oddly enough, this is not true. In some sections of California, the residents use 50% more water outdoors when watering their landscaping and lawn. Obviously this needs to be addressed in order to properly perform water conservation activities.

When watering the lawn, make sure to do it early in the morning or early in the evening when the temperatures are at their coolest. This will save you roughly 25 gallons of water each time that you water the lawn. Some residents like to turn on their sprinklers and let them run a lot longer than necessary. Make it a point to stop over watering your lawn and this will also help to conserve this precious resource.

Please use these tips to help conserve water as we work our way through this severe California drought.
